MTA Rebrands after 43 Years of Service

Manchester Transit Authority Rebrands after 43 Years of Service

In September of 2016, Manchester Transit Authority and Manchester Community College entered into a public, private partnership to provide the students of MCC the opportunity to have a real-life design project. This provided the MTA multiple design options for rebranding.

Ryan Renauld-Smith, MTA Assistant Director and David Westerdale, MTA Project Manager reached out to the local colleges and universities and were delighted that Kim Keegan, MTA Commissioner and Vice President of Student Affairs and Community Development offered MCC’s design department for this project. Ryan and David then met with Professor Benjamin Shippee, Graphic Design Instructor at MCC and his students to create a real-life designer/client relationship. Throughout the Fall 2016 semester, the students shared their progress and their final project were presented to Mike Whitten, MTA Executive Director, Ryan and David. The intent at the beginning of the semester was to award the rebranding of the MTA to one of the student designers, however when the designs were shared with the MTA staff they were not able to choose just one concept.

After careful review of all the designs, the MTA staff unanimously agreed that two of the projects stood out, and both were awarded the opportunity to have their design ideas publicly utilized in the MTA rebranding.  The winning designers Emily Rentz and Thomas Campbell were contacted in early January with the news. Emily had designed a unique logo and color scheme, which represented the modern feel that the MTA was looking to achieve. Thomas’ concept of incorporating the slogan and logo of ZipLine seemed to be a perfect fit with MTA’s goals of providing regional transportation in addition to having some visual synergy to Emily’s logo.

“I could not be more honored to have been chosen as one of the winners!
Thank you for such an incredible opportunity.”

-Emily Rentz
